The Power of Reading for Elementary Schoolers

As either a teaching mother or homeschooling mother, you have the incredible opportunity to shape your child’s education and instill in them a lifelong love for learning. One of the most powerful tools at your disposal is the magic of reading. Not only does reading help develop important language and comprehension skills, but it also sparks imagination and creativity.

But finding the right books for your child can be a challenge. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of exciting novels that are perfect for homeschoolers in grades 3-5. These books will captivate your child’s interest and keep them engaged in their reading journey. Bonus- all of these can be found on Amazon in print version, Kindle version, and Audible! As a teacher, I can attest- reading is reading! Doesn’t matter if it’s read to them, or they read the words themselves. So let’s get reading!

Action and Adventure Await

If your child loves a thrilling tale of mystery and adventure, then these novels are sure to delight them. The Secret of the Old Clock by Carolyn Keene introduces young readers to the world of Nancy Drew, a clever and resourceful detective. The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan takes readers on a mythological quest with Percy Jackson, a demigod with extraordinary powers.

For those who enjoy stories about bravery and perseverance, Holes by Louis Sachar tells the tale of Stanley Yelnats as he uncovers the truth about Camp Green Lake. The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate is a heartwarming story about a gorilla who finds his strength and courage to protect his friends.

Let Imagination Soar

If your child has a vivid imagination and loves magical worlds and fantastical creatures, then these novels are a must-read. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis takes readers on a thrilling adventure through the land of Narnia. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle explores the concept of time travel and the battle between good and evil.

Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson tells the story of two friends who create their own magical kingdom in the woods (full disclosure- this book has more mature themes such as death and grief, so we recommend it for the older elementary/middle school crowd) . The Spiderwick Chronicles by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi introduces young readers to a hidden world of faeries and goblins.
